Principles of Emergence - A Generic Framework of Firms as Agent-Based Complex Adaptive Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
The concept of emergence is closely related to complexity theory. While this agentbased approach is on its way of becoming a new paradigm in management science, the system dynamics approach is suffering from a lack of management attention, although both are applied to similar problems with similar outcomes. In previous research, scholars have compared system dynamics and agent-based modeling. This paper steps back from the modeling aspect and looks at the requisite conditions, as identified by complexity science, that make emergent phenomena happen in complex adaptive systems. These are agentbased systems that balance emergent efficiency and innovation without central control. We give a comprehensive overview of principles of emergence in such systems and propose a generic framework of these systems for use in management science. This framework then serves to assess exemplary literature applying complexity science to firms and to discuss research implications for both agent-based and system dynamics approaches.

A review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science
We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...
متن کاملOrigin and Evolution of Supply Chain Networks using Complex Adaptive Systems
How does decision-making of individual firms result in the emergence of different supply chain network structures? In this research we use a complex adaptive systems based framework to grow and evolve supply chain networks to answer the question. We are using an agent-based hybrid simulation (discrete time and discrete event) methodology to implement the framework. Preliminary results and analy...
متن کاملRe-conceptualizing Agile Information Systems Development Using Complex Adaptive Systems Theory
Complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory characterizes the role of emergence in the world of frequent and continuous change. In the context of information systems (IS) CAS can help conceptualize the phenomenon of IS emergence. In this domain agile development methods were introduced to address speed and the problems of change in IS development. The paper provides a review of agile development prac...
متن کاملFFCAS: A Flexible Agent-Based Simulation Framework for Complex Adaptive Systems
Agent-based simulation methodology has shown merits to handle complex adaptive systems' spontaneity, non-linearity, uncertainty, relevancy and emergence. Based on the agent theory of modeling and simulation, this paper proposes a flexible, scalable and cross-domain framework for simulating complex adaptive systems. After discussion on the design of FFCAS, applications on FFCAS in different comp...
متن کاملTheory of deferred action: Agent-based simulation model for designing complex adaptive systems
Deferred action is the axiom that agents act in emergent organisation to achieve predetermined goals. Enabling deferred action in designed artificial complex adaptive systems like business organisations and IS is problematical. Emergence is an intractable problem for designers because it cannot be predicted. We develop proof-of-concept, conceptual proto-agent model, of emergent organisation and...
